The Louisiana Educator

Carolyn Hill currently, humbly serves BESE District 8 (Board of Elementary and Secondary Education). Louisiana’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education provides leadership and creates policies for education that expand opportunities for children, empower families and communities, and advance Louisiana in an increasingly competitive global market.

 

Carolyn Hill, a hometown leader, is the second oldest of five children. Being a product of the public school system and being reared in a family of educators, Carolyn learned at an early age the importance of education and how it affects our community and economy. Upon completion of high school in Miami, Carolyn relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to attend Southern University. While attending Southern University as a full-time student, Carolyn was an active member in the Social Work Action Club and reside as the Chaplain for 3 conservative years, as well as, a mentor volunteer for the Social Work Department. Throughout her years as a Southern-Nite, she was also actively involved with the Student Government Association and the National Association for the Advancement of Color People (NAACP). During her tenure at Southern University, Carolyn was employed by the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus where she assisted State Representatives and Senators with researching legislative bills and preparing community resources and hurricane survivor kits for various organizations. Carolyn was also employed by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge and the Family Service of Greater Baton Rouge, where she worked with the Independent Living Program. She assisted children who resided in group homes and who were in foster care to make transition from dependency to independent living.

 

Carolyn furthered her academic career earning a Master’s degree in Social Work from Louisiana State University (LSU). While attending LSU, Carolyn served as the President of the Social Work Student Association, appointed as a graduate senate officer in Student Government and served as President of the National Association for Black Social Workers.  Throughout her academic and professional career, she has held memberships and affiliations with several groups and organizations such as the Junior League, National Association of Social Workers, Big Buddy, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), just to list a few.
